Experienced PR Card Renewal Immigration Lawyers

To keep your PR status, you must live in Canada for at least 2 out of every 5 years. Time spent abroad with a Canadian citizen spouse or working for a Canadian company can count towards this requirement.

Inside Canada: Apply for PR Card renewal 9 months before it expires. Proper documentation is crucial to prove residency obligations.

Outside Canada: If your PR Card expires while you are outside Canada, you may apply for a Travel Document at the nearest visa office or use other methods depending on your situation.

At Mandall Immigration Law, we guide you through the renewal process, ensuring all residency requirements are met and documented. Contact us for expert help in renewing your PR Card. For more details or to start your application, book a consultation with us.

FAQs for PR Card Renewals in Canada

It’s recommended to apply for renewal about six months before your card expires. Processing times can vary, so applying early helps ensure you maintain valid proof of permanent resident status, especially if you need to travel.

To keep your permanent resident status, you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 730 days within the last five years. These days do not need to be consecutive, and some exceptions may apply if you were abroad for work or accompanied by a Canadian spouse.

If your PR card is expired, you cannot board a commercial flight back to Canada. If you must travel, you may need to apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD). It’s best to avoid travel until your new PR card is issued.

Applicants typically must provide:

  • A completed application form
  • A copy of their current PR card
  • Two compliant photos
  • Proof of residency in Canada (travel history, tax documents, employment records, etc.)
Additional documents may be required depending on your circumstances.

If IRCC refuses your renewal, it is usually due to residency requirement issues or missing documentation. You may be able to reapply with stronger evidence or, in some cases, appeal the decision. An immigration lawyer can help assess the best path forward.
