Experienced Visitor Visa Immigration Lawyers

Canada welcomes over 35 million visitors annually, yet obtaining a visitor visa requires meeting strict criteria and passing a thorough inspection by immigration officers.

Do You Need a Visa?

Depending on your nationality, you might not need a visa. Visa-exempt travelers require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for air travel, valid for 5 years or until passport expiration, allowing visits of up to 6 months. Duration of Stay Most visitor visas issued are multiple-entry, permitting up to 6 months per visit, typically valid for 10 years. A border officer may stamp your passport with a specific departure date.

Who Can Apply for a Canadian Visitor Visa?

Canada issues visitor visas—also known as temporary resident visas—to individuals who can show they meet the government’s basic eligibility standards. While every application is assessed individually, most applicants must demonstrate the following:

Core Eligibility Requirements

1. Proof of Identity
You need an acceptable travel document, most commonly a valid passport.

2. Good Health
Some applicants may be asked to complete a medical exam to confirm they are medically admissible.

3. Clean Background
Individuals with certain criminal charges or past immigration violations may be found inadmissible.

4. Intent to Return Home
Immigration officers must be convinced that you will leave Canada once your permitted stay ends. Strong ties such as employment, family obligations, property, or financial responsibilities often help establish this.

5. Financial Ability
Applicants must show they have enough funds to cover travel costs, accommodation, and day-to-day expenses during their visit.

Additional Requirements That May Apply

Depending on your situation, you may be asked to:

  • Provide biometrics (fingerprints and photographs)
  • Submit a letter of invitation from a Canadian resident
  • Complete a medical examination
  • Supply extra documents that support the purpose of your trip

After Your Visa is Issued

If approved, the visa is placed in your passport and outlines how long you may remain in Canada. Travelers who want to stay longer than the date granted must apply for an extension, preferably at least 30 days before their current status expires.

FAQs for Visitor Visas in Canada

Most visitors are allowed to remain in Canada for up to six months from the date they enter the country. The exact date is determined by the border services officer and may be shorter or longer depending on your situation. If you wish to stay beyond the authorized period, you must apply for an extension before your status expires.

An invitation letter is not always required, but it can help strengthen your application—especially if you are visiting family or friends. The letter should explain who you’re visiting, the purpose of your trip, and how your stay will be supported. Even with an invitation letter, you still need to show that you meet all other eligibility requirements.

Immigration officers assess whether you are likely to leave Canada at the end of your visit. Common supporting documents include:

Evidence of employment or school enrollment

Proof of property ownership or rental agreements

Family responsibilities in your home country

Bank statements showing financial stability
These documents help demonstrate your ties and intention to return.

Processing times vary depending on the applicant’s country of residence, the time of year, and whether biometrics are required. On average, the process can range from a few weeks to several months. Applicants should check the Government of Canada’s current processing estimates and apply well in advance of their planned travel date.

A Visitor Visa does not allow you to work or enroll in long-term study programs. Short courses (generally less than six months) may be permitted, but employment of any kind is prohibited without proper authorization. If you intend to work or pursue extended studies, you must apply for the appropriate work permit or study permit.
